Second Laziest Post Ever on Company Culture

by

My first laziest post is here.

This one is lazy because I’m referring you to a post I saw on LinkedIn last week about the corporate culture at HubSpot.  Like the Netflix company handbook that became a monster share a few years back I’m guessing this will also give most of the HR twitterati culturegasms and make everyone want to work at HubSpot.

Heck – that’s what it is intended to do.  Good job boys and girls.

Here’s the slide deck (subscribers will need to click through to see the slides I think.)

I’ll have some commentary after the jump…

Culture Code: Creating A Lovable Company
from HubSpot All-in-one Marketing Software

There are over 150 slides in this deck (I think that might be Presentation Zen violation #1) that I think can be boiled down to…

  1. Think customers first
  2. Tell the truth as much as you can with as many as you can
  3. Hire AWESOME people (not just capital “A” – capital WESOME too)
  4. Assume change is a constant
  5. Remove barriers to people being AWESOME-ER (see #3)

I don’t think any one of these is a revelation.  They all make way too much sense.  Anyone who reads them will nod in agreement.

But here’s the rub.

Do you have the guts to do it?

This isn’t about people you hire.  This isn’t about skill sets and managing the skills gap.  This isn’t really about reward and recognition (it is sorta – ‘cuz if you don’t reinforce behaviors that support those 5 things they won’t happen as often.)

THIS IS ABOUT MANAGEMENT HAVING GUTS.

I’ve said to more often than I care to: success comes from managers doing their jobs better than other companies’ managers.  #FACT

Go be better managers.  Go do 5 things today.
